Jack Of All Trades

Taylor Wins For Number 5

A big well done to Taylor Thomas, who becomes ADO's 5th Jack Petchey winner. Taylor is one of ADO's Young Leaders and has been helping in many areas of the business since taking on that role. She is a great all rounder who can adapt herself to many of the roles required at ADO. Taylor has gained valuable work experience working as part of the ADO support team for many events over the last couple of years and is a valued member of the ADO team. She was voted by her peers for many reasons, but primarily for her kind, committed, helpful mentoring, always with a big smile across her face at all times. Her prize money will be put towards the Low Ropes equipment we purchased to give children and young people a great opportunity to learn new adventure and physical skills. Well done Taylor!

Animal Therapy News

That New Alternative Healthcare...Its Called Animal Therapy!

If ADO had not been working with snakes since 2009 for therapeutic purposes, you would have thought this news was simply amazing! Its hardly hot off the press for all those organisations and individuals that we have worked with over the years. Snakes are being used in the mainstream at a top London clinic to help patients overcome low self-worth and "communication issues". In fact ADO already work with our own snakes to cover a whole range of mental and physical ill health and disabilities, as we do with the other 50-odd other species we have. Its hardly news for us here at ADO, but good news that finally Animal Assisted Activities and Therapy are starting to get recognised in the mainstream.

ADO and IKON - Big On Quality - Lidl 'n' Nature

Bug Hotel is Simply Exemplary !

If you remember back in June, we installed a monster ten-story bug hotel with surrounding wildlflower garden and insect loving plants at the new Lidl construction site on Upper Wickham Lane, Welling in partnership with IKON Construction. The idea was masterminded by IKON Site Sustainability Manager Iain Henderson, who was quick to get his friendly neighbours ADO involved with Community Wildlife Garden Project. The project is now coming to its natural end as the building work advances within the site footprint and the garden has now been levelled for further site works, as the store is due to open in November.

Dan's The Man!

We have mentioned in the past about our Young Mentor Dan Birmingham, 13 and his Jack Petchey Award, but now he has been chosen by the Jack Petchey Organisation as the subject of a special case study for his achievements and fundraising for Mental Health Awareness. Dan has volunteered for ADO all Summer at various Community Events and is a valued member of the team now.

Here is the official press release from Jack Petchey Organisation highlighting Dan's achievements.

This summer, Animal Days Out (ADO) presented their first ever Achievement Awards since joining the scheme earlier this year. ADO provides recreational, educational and therapeutic opportunities for young people with animals, wildlife and nature. Their sessions are geared to both mainstream and Special Educational Needs (SEN) members.

Daniel Birmingham, aged 13, was chosen to be one of the first Achievement Award winners at the organisation. Dan has been attending the afterschool club for over three years and became an ADO mentor two years ago. As a mentor, he plays an important role in helping the staff to lead the group through various activities and programmes. Dan now frequently assists at the ADO holiday clubs, often attending from 8am-6pm because he enjoys being part of the team and having responsibilities.

The primary reason for Dan receiving the club’s first ever Jack Petchey Achievement Award is because of how helpful and welcoming the younger children find him. ADO have many children accessing their services who may only attend for one day, but that is usually all it takes for them to make a new friend in Dan. During the peer nomination process, he received the most amount of votes.

Reasons as to why Dan should win the award included:

"I find Dan the most helpful person, because when I got bitten by an ant Dan looked after me and took me to the leader"

"Dan is silly and makes me laugh when I feel sad, which helps me feel happy"

"Dan is helpful because he made me feel better when I fell over."

On top of Dan’s achievements and progression within ADO, he also showed a caring and supportive side of himself, when he found out that one of the members of staff had lost a family member due to mental illness. Dan felt a great deal of empathy for them and organised a secret charity bike ride in their honour. He cycled for 20 miles, raising over £400 for a mental health charity! For this, he was also nominated by a staff member for the Pride of Britain Award.

Daniel decided to spend his £250 Jack Petchey Achievement Award on a wide selection of gardening tools for ADO’s mainstream and SEN members to use during conservation activities in the local area.

Congratulations on your award Dan and keep up the good work!
