An IKONic Bug Hotel Arises From Construction
The new Lidl construction site at Upper Wickham Lane, Welling has had a new extension in the shape of a ten-story high bug hotel with surrounding wildlife garden. It’s all thanks to IKON Construction who kindly funded the project and Animal Days Out C.I.C. who designed and built the bug hotel using man made building site materials and natural materials gathered from local welling woodland.
The project has two key aims and objectives. The first is to engage the local community with an opportunity to view the habitable zone at street level, whilst offering local schools and community organisations the chance to visit the site and experience how modern construction and wildlife can co-exist together. The second is because IKON Construction are dedicated in their quest to ensure they exceed all the strict environmental and best practice guidelines for modern day construction sites, monitored throughout the project by the industry watchdog, The Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS).
Over the coming months we will be observing the amount of wildlife making its home in and around the bug hotel and offering local groups the opportunity to visit and learn more. Although within the grounds of the secure construction site, families, shoppers, commuters and passers-by can view the bug hotel through a window installed into the perimeter fencing.
Animal Days Out will be out and about over the coming months at more IKON construction sites installing more bug hotels and wildlife gardens. At the end of the project, before the new state of the art Lidl’s reopen at each site, the materials will be moved offsite, reused and installed again at ADO and partner sites to be enjoyed once again.
