Changing Thoughts, Emotions & Behaviour

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is fundamentally a collaborative project between a therapist and a client. CBT is a talking therapy to aid clients to manage problems by changing thoughts, emotions and behaviours. CBT helps the client to look at how they think about events and situations and how this affects the way we act. In turn, actions impact how we think and feel.

How Does It Work?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy involves a set of sessions led by a therapist qualified in CBT. The aim and benefits of CBT are to assist and educate the clients to become their own therapists over time and learn techniques to adjust and adapt their thoughts and subsequent behaviours. These changes, in turn improve your everyday health, as well as long term well-being.

Benefits of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

CBT has been proven to help in treating a wide range of emotional and physical health conditions in children, young people and adults and can include but are not limited to;

♦ Depression  ♦ Anxiety Disorders  ♦ Phobias (Including Animal Phobias)  ♦ Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

♦ Schizophrenia and Psychosis  ♦ Bi-polar Disorder  ♦ Chronic Fatigue  ♦ Chronic Pain

♦ Physical Symptoms Without Diagnosis  ♦ Sleep Difficulties

The strategies utilised in session discussions and through homework enable the therapist to work with the client on various areas of their life which may be causing issues. The therapist will review the current difficulties with the client and agree to set goals to achieve. These will be dependent on the needs and priorities of the client. CBT sessions will advise how you can practically apply these techniques in daily life in between sessions and after treatment ends.

Homework

It should be noted that CBT requires joint work from both client and therapist and involves committed hard work during and between the sessions. For children and young people undertaking CBT, parents and carers will be required to support and encourage this work in between sessions. CBT does not provide answers to problems, the therapist will help the client decide what difficulties to work on and enable the client to improve the situation.

Assessment Session

An assessment session enables us to annotate and discuss the client history with the client to enable the therapists to determine the relevant course of therapy to commence with. Assessments will be led by a qualified Therapist. If the client is a child or young person, a relevant parent/carer will be required to attend for the assessment and this can be discussed at time of booking.

Number of Sessions

To effectively benefit from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and the associated techniques requires a recommended minimum commitment of 2-4 blocks of therapy (12-24 sessions).

Poets Corner - A Natural & Relaxing SettingSpecialisms: Animal Assisted Therapy and Eco-Therapy

We provide specialist therapeutic interventions with the option of combining CBT with Animal Assisted Therapy so that animals can be present to aid the therapist and client relationship or to provide specific AAT animal phobia work. We offer complementary therapy blocks including Relaxation, Fitness and Nature Therapy which may be discussed as solutions to a number a specific needs throughout the CBT program.

Settings and Session Space

CBT will be offered in our therapy rooms in Welling Town Centre and may be combined with sessions or blocks at our 6.4 acre Outdoor Nature Therapy Centre - Poets Corner,  which is a separate site also based in Welling, Kent. CBT may require behavioural experiments to overcome fears of certain situations or scenarios. Therefore exposure experiments supported by a therapist in other settings maybe discussed as required during therapy.
