Conservation and Ecology
Animal Days Out CIC is an official training centre for AQA and delivers accredited courses through the Unit Award Scheme. We offer Conservation and Ecology training across a number of sites to give our students an interactive learning experience throughout a diverse range of environments and biodiversity.
Throughout this AQA unit, we utilise a range of our training sites to deliver a real and focussed learning experience where the coursework actually enhances and helps develop the locations used. These include:
♦ Local Rivers and Streams - Including The River Wogebourne with a Pollution and Conservation focus
♦ Community Parks and Open Spaces – We work with various “Friends of the Parks” and the local authority park ranger teams creating opportunities to improve local community spaces.
♦ Community Garden - Ornamental and forest gardening with a focus on accessibility and public use.
♦ Sensory Garden - Therapeutic gardening with a focus on sensory elements.
♦ Environmental - Climatic - Opportunities for specific learning about the environment including climate
In addition our Conservation and Pollution units cover:
♦ Clearing and Weeding - Knowledge of invasive species local to the area or specific projects undertaken. Methods on clearing and coppicing correctly for regeneration and conserve any plants & trees as relevant.
♦ Tools - How to safely select tools for specific tasks and how to store and maintain tools for longer life.
♦ River Conservation - Working in the local river to clear any pollution or projects to improve the river and support wildlife.
♦ Habitats - Identifying a suitable area and creating a habitat.
♦ Specific Tool Use - Woodworking and sawing for habitat creation.
♦ Health and Safety - Understanding and adhering to Health and Safety within Conservation and Ecology projects and understanding risks.
♦ Pollution - Knowledge and surveys of types of pollution.
♦ Plant Life - Comparison of different environments and the biodiversity.
♦ River Life - Pond dipping and learning about the pond life organisms.
♦ Birds and Bird Boxes - Knowledge of local bird species and practical skills in creation of a Bird Box to be placed in the local area.
