ADO Joins Safe Space Scheme

ADO have joined up with a fantastic initiative from Bexley MENCAP, supporting a scheme where by there are designated 'safe spaces' for those with learning disabilities and difficulties. The scheme provides a temporary safe place for a person who is distressed or in danger, until help and support arrives. ADO have registered our main office and our Outdoor Education & Therapy Centre, both in Welling. Both sites will display the MENCAP Safe Place stickers in places visible from main pathways.

What is the Safe Place Scheme?

Here we have our friends at Bexley MENCAP explaining the scheme;

This is to provide a temporary safe place for someone with a learning disability who is distressed or in danger until help and support arrive. Why do we need it? People with learning disabilities can be very vulnerable, the scheme is about keeping people safe in the community. This means that if people are out and about and are being threatened or bullied they can go into a shop, office or place of work with a safe place sticker and ask for help. What will I need to do if I join the scheme?

♦ You will be asked to put a safe place sticker in your window

♦ This shows that your organisation is a safe place for someone with a learning disability to come and get help

♦ Shops and organisations are not expected to make many calls but to provide a temporary safe place for people with a learning disability until help and support arrive

♦You will be given some short training about the safe place scheme by Bexley Mencap

Further information is available if you are a business and would like to get involved in the scheme. Please e-mail Nick Marsden at nick@bexleymencap.org.uk if you would like to participate.
